Few self-taught American painters carry the weight that Horace Pippin does. A Black veteran of World War I, he taught himself to paint after a war injury left his right arm partially disabled, guiding it with his left hand to produce densely worked compositions on memory, faith, and the lives of Black Americans in early twentieth-century Pennsylvania. His domestic interiors and biblical scenes from the late 1930s and 1940s drew the attention of Albert Barnes and placed him alongside the leading folk modernists of his day.
