About Gerardus Mercator

The Flemish cartographer who, in 1569, solved a problem that had vexed navigators for centuries: how to render a round Earth on a flat page in a way ships could actually use. His projection preserved compass bearings as straight lines, making it possible to plot a course with a ruler. The trade-off, that famous distortion swelling Greenland to continental scale, is the price of that navigational clarity. Trained as an engraver and instrument maker, he brought a craftsman's precision to mapmaking at the moment European powers were charting the New World. His maps read today as documents of ambition, beautiful objects from an age when geography itself was unfinished.
