About Jack Wilkinson Smith

Few American painters caught the Pacific coastline with the authority of this Chicago-born landscapist, who traded the Midwest for Southern California in 1906 and never looked back. Trained at the Chicago Art Institute and Cincinnati Art Academy, he became a fixture of the early California plein air school, painting alongside Edgar Payne and William Wendt and helping found the Biltmore Salon in Los Angeles. His marines are the work most collectors chase: surging Pacific swells against sun-bleached rock, rendered with a draftsman's structure and a colorist's restraint. For anyone drawn to the rugged optimism of early twentieth-century California painting, his coastal scenes still hold their ground.
