About Isidore Pils

A nineteenth-century French academic painter who trained under François-Édouard Picot and won the Prix de Rome in 1838, he built his reputation on religious and military subjects rendered with the disciplined draftsmanship the École des Beaux-Arts demanded. His preparatory studies, particularly the figure and drapery work tied to his murals at Saint-Eustache and the Paris Opéra, reveal the unglamorous engine room of academic practice: patient observation, repeated revision, anatomy understood through the cloth.
