About John Singleton Copley

Colonial America's finest portraitist worked largely without formal training, teaching himself to render silk, mahogany, and skin with a precision that startled even his European peers. Born in Boston in 1738, he painted the merchant class and revolutionary figures of pre-war New England with an unsparing eye for character - sitters look out at you slightly wary, as if mid-thought. He left for London in 1774 and reinvented himself as a history painter, but his American portraits remain the work he is most respected for. For viewers today, his portraits offer something rare: faces from the founding generation, painted by someone who actually knew them.
