About Cyprian Majernik
Among the Slovak modernists who came of age between the wars, few worked with such melancholy economy. Trained in Prague in the late 1920s and shaped by his time in Paris, he absorbed the lessons of French expressionism and the École de Paris before turning them toward distinctly Central European subjects: harlequins, riders, refugees, lovers in dim interiors. His later work, made as illness closed in during the early 1940s, grew increasingly spare and haunted. For a contemporary viewer, his paintings offer something rare: figurative work that feels both tender and unsettled, intimate scenes carrying the weight of a Europe coming apart.
