About Tom Thomson Fix

Few painters compressed a national landscape into such a brief working life. Active for barely five years before his mysterious death on Canoe Lake in 1917, this Canadian painter laid the groundwork for what would become the Group of Seven, though he died before they formally banded together. His small oil sketches on birch panels - painted outdoors in Algonquin Park - capture northern light, weather, and water with a directness that still feels startlingly modern, all loaded brushwork and high-keyed colour. For anyone drawn to wild country, his paintings hold the particular pull of the Canadian Shield: spruce, granite, and shifting sky.
