About Pal

Born Jean de Paléologue in Bucharest in 1855, this Romanian-French illustrator signed his posters simply "PAL" and became one of the defining voices of the Belle Époque advertising boom in 1890s Paris. Working alongside Chéret and Mucha, he carved out his own territory: voluptuous, athletic women rendered in confident line and saturated color, selling everything from cognac to bicycles to mineral water. His commercial instincts eventually carried him to America, where he turned to magazine illustration in the early twentieth century. What makes a PAL print rewarding now is exactly what made it sell then - high-spirited draftsmanship, theatrical composition, and an unapologetic sense of glamour rooted in the Parisian street.
