About Lilla Cabot Perry

One of the earliest American painters to fully absorb French Impressionism at its source, she summered in Giverny near Claude Monet for nearly a decade beginning in 1889, and became one of his most articulate interpreters back home. Born in Boston in 1848 into the cultivated Cabot family, she came to painting in her thirties and trained in Paris, eventually splitting her time between New England, France, and Japan, where her husband taught literature. Her portraits and quiet interiors carry the soft, broken light of Monet's circle but anchor it in a distinctly American sense of poise. Look at her work and you see Impressionism translated for a more reserved sensibility.
