About Jean Beraud

Few painters caught the rhythm of Belle Époque Paris quite like this Russian-born Frenchman, who turned the boulevards, cafés, and shop windows of the 1880s and '90s into his great subject. Trained under Léon Bonnat, he broke with academic convention not through abstraction but through sharp observation, painting top-hatted gentlemen, working women, and horse-drawn cabs with a near-journalistic eye for weather and gaslight. He exhibited alongside the Impressionists yet kept his draftsmanship crisp, closer to Tissot than to Monet. For anyone drawn to old Paris - its wet pavement, its bustle, its particular silver light - his scenes still feel like walking into the moment itself.
