About Theophile Alexandre Steinlen

Few artists captured fin-de-siècle Paris with the same street-level honesty. A Swiss-born printmaker who settled in Montmartre in the 1880s, Steinlen (1859–1923) became the visual chronicler of working-class Parisians, stray cats, laundresses, and the bohemian crowd orbiting Le Chat Noir cabaret, for which he designed his most familiar poster. His draftsmanship sits somewhere between Daumier's social bite and Toulouse-Lautrec's nightlife glamour, though Steinlen pulled harder toward sympathy than satire. The wartime lithographs of the 1910s carry real moral weight. For collectors today, his prints offer that rare combination: graphic punch, genuine tenderness, and a window into a city that no longer exists.
