About Robert Henri Scan
Few American painters did more to drag portraiture out of the gilded parlor than the founder of the Ashcan School. Trained in Philadelphia and Paris in the 1880s and 90s, he absorbed Manet and Hals, then turned that loose, dark-toned brushwork loose on Irish children, Spanish dancers, and ordinary New Yorkers his peers wouldn't have bothered with. As a teacher at the Art Students League, he shaped Edward Hopper, George Bellows, and Rockwell Kent, and his 1923 book The Art Spirit is still passed between painters today. His landscapes and figures carry an unfussy honesty that reads as quietly modern more than a century on.
