About Joaquin Mir Trinxet

Among the Catalan modernistas, few pushed landscape as far toward pure color as this Barcelona-born painter (1873-1940). A founding member of the Colla del Safrà alongside Isidre Nonell, he spent the late 1890s painting Mallorca's terraced hillsides and the gardens of the Generalife in Granada, dissolving rock and foliage into thickets of high-key pigment that edge close to abstraction without ever quite leaving the visible world behind. His mature canvases sit in a productive tension between Post-Impressionist observation and something more decorative, more Mediterranean. For anyone drawn to landscape that vibrates rather than describes, his hillside scenes still feel surprisingly current.
