About Sir Edward Coley Burne Jones

Born in Birmingham in 1833, he came to painting through Oxford and a chance friendship with Dante Gabriel Rossetti, who pulled him into the orbit of the Pre-Raphaelites and away from a planned career in the clergy. What followed was a body of work steeped in Arthurian legend, Greek myth, and medieval romance, rendered in the cool, attenuated figures and twilight palette that became his signature. Alongside William Morris, he also designed stained glass and tapestry for the Arts and Crafts movement. For modern viewers, the appeal is in that dreamlike stillness - narrative paintings that feel less like illustrations than slow, contemplative spells.
