About John F Haberle
One of the three great American trompe l'oeil painters of the late nineteenth century, alongside William Harnett and John Peto, he pushed illusionism to its limits with renderings of paper currency, postage stamps, news clippings and torn ephemera so convincing that the U.S. Treasury reportedly took an interest in his painted bills. Working largely out of New Haven from the 1880s onward, he favored small, intimate panels packed with visual jokes and sly self-portraits hidden among the clutter. His pictures reward close looking, and that wit at close range is exactly what makes them feel surprisingly modern on a wall today.
