About Elizabeth Thompson

Few Victorian painters did more to dignify the common soldier. Lady Butler, born Elizabeth Thompson in 1846, made her name in 1874 with The Roll Call, a canvas Queen Victoria personally acquired after it caused a sensation at the Royal Academy. She painted the British Army not in triumphant tableaux but in mud, exhaustion, and the close press of cavalry charges - Scotland Forever! being the most visceral example, all flared nostrils and bared teeth. Trained in South Kensington and Florence, she was a rare woman working at the scale and subject of history painting. Her battle scenes remain extraordinary studies in collective human pressure under fire.
