About Henri Martin

One of the late Post-Impressionists who took Pointillism somewhere softer and stranger, this French painter (1860-1943) traded Seurat's scientific dots for loose, feathery strokes of broken color. He trained in Toulouse before heading to Paris, won a gold medal at the 1900 Exposition Universelle, and spent decades painting the countryside around Marquayrol, his property in the Lot. His landscapes hover between Symbolism and Divisionism - sunlit, slightly dreamlike, never quite literal. For contemporary viewers, the appeal is exactly that haze: gardens, peasants, and village lanes rendered with enough atmosphere to feel remembered rather than merely observed.
