About Ary Scheffer

Dutch-born but thoroughly Parisian by training, this nineteenth-century painter built his reputation on a strain of Romanticism more contemplative than dramatic, favoring inward emotion over Delacroix's heat. Born in Dordrecht in 1795, he studied under Pierre-Paul Guérin in Paris and became a favorite of the Orléans family, eventually drawing tutoring duties for Louis-Philippe's children. His literary subjects from Goethe and Dante, alongside intimate portraits and devotional heads of Christ, gave him a wide reach across mid-century European taste. For modern viewers, the appeal lies in his restraint: tender faces, muted palettes, and a quiet melancholy that reads as surprisingly current on a wall today.
