About Jaume Ferrer The Younger

A central figure in the Catalan International Gothic, working out of Lleida in the mid-fifteenth century, he inherited both his father's workshop and the regional pictorial language that came with it. His altarpieces and devotional panels carry the gilded backgrounds, elongated saints, and meticulous brocade patterning typical of the style, but with a softer modeling of the face that hints at the Flemish influences trickling south through Aragon around 1450. For viewers drawn to early religious painting, his work offers the quiet intensity of pre-Renaissance devotion - saints rendered with stillness and gravity rather than drama, intended to reward slow looking.
