Few figures sit as strangely at the crossroads of medieval science and visionary art as this fifteenth-century English alchemist, an Augustinian canon of Bridlington whose name became attached to some of the most elaborate emblematic imagery of the late Middle Ages. The so-called Ripley Scrolls, produced in various hand-painted versions from the late fifteenth into the sixteenth century, translate his alchemical poem the Compound of Alchemy into a vertical procession of dragons, suns, moons, and robed adepts. For a modern viewer, the appeal is immediate: dense symbolic narrative rendered with the saturated color and bold linework of early manuscript illumination, centuries before Surrealism caught up.
