About Pierre Daura

A Catalan painter who became, almost by accident, a chronicler of rural Virginia. Born in Minorca in 1896 and trained in Barcelona, he moved to Paris in the 1920s and co-founded Cercle et Carré in 1930, the short-lived but influential group that gathered Mondrian, Arp, and other abstractionists around Joaquín Torres-García. The Spanish Civil War redirected everything: he eventually settled in Rockbridge Baths, Virginia, where the surrounding hills became his lasting subject. His later landscapes and intimate portraits trade Parisian theory for direct observation, painted with a quiet, structural hand. The result feels both European and unmistakably Appalachian, which is why his work still rewards a slow look.
