About Birch Thomas

Born in England in 1779 and arriving in Philadelphia as a teenager, this painter became the first significant marine artist working in America. He trained under his father, the enamel painter William Russell Birch, before turning to oils and finding his subject along the Delaware River and the Atlantic coast. His detailed renderings of clipper ships, harbor traffic, and Pennsylvania winter scenes established the visual vocabulary that later American marine painters would build on through the nineteenth century. The appeal for a modern viewer lies in the quiet precision of his draftsmanship - rigging you could almost count, weather you can feel, a working coastline rendered without sentimentality.
