About Marianne North

Few Victorian botanical painters worked with her sheer geographical appetite. Between 1871 and 1885, she travelled alone across six continents, painting plants in oils directly from life in their native habitats - a radical departure from the watercolour-on-vellum tradition that dominated botanical art at the time. Her saturated, full-colour studies captured species before photography could, and Joseph Hooker built her a dedicated gallery at Kew that still hangs her 832 paintings exactly as she arranged them. For contemporary viewers, her work sits at an unusual intersection: scientifically observed but compositionally bold, with the dense, jewel-toned palette of a serious painter rather than a polite illustrator.
