About Preston Dickinson
Among the first American modernists to fully absorb what was happening in Paris, he brought Cézanne's structural logic and a touch of Cubist fracture home to subjects most of his contemporaries were still painting in muted realism. Born in New York in 1889 and trained at the Art Students League, he studied in France before returning to develop a precisionist-adjacent style that found geometry in grain elevators, factories, and quiet domestic still lifes. His career was cut short when he died in Spain in 1930, leaving a compact body of work. The pictures hold up because they balance rigor and warmth without choosing sides.
