About Night

Born in Nova Scotia in 1873 and trained briefly under Twachtman and Weir, Ernest Lawson brought a heavier, more tactile hand to American Impressionism than most of his peers. He's often grouped with The Eight, the urban realists led by Robert Henri, but his real subject was the unglamorous edges of New York - the bridges, riverbanks, and tenement backs of upper Manhattan and the Harlem River, painted in thick crusts of pigment that one critic famously described as "crushed jewels." For a contemporary eye, Lawson's nocturnes still feel modern: muted, atmospheric, and grounded in a specific American landscape rather than borrowed European light.
