About Jan Van Os

Working in the Dutch Golden Age tradition long after its peak, this eighteenth-century painter (1744–1808) carried the lush still life forward into a new era. He trained in The Hague and built his reputation on densely composed arrangements of fruit, flowers, and game, painted with the kind of slow, deliberate finish that lets every grape bloom and curling leaf hold its weight. He openly modeled himself on Jan van Huysum, the master of the previous generation, and matched him for technical patience if not invention. For a contemporary room, his pieces bring the gravity of the old Dutch masters without the darker religious undertones - opulence, abundance, and a quiet sense of time passing.
