About Jan Baptist Weenix

A Dutch Golden Age painter who built his reputation on the Italianate landscape and, increasingly, on opulent game still lifes that would shape the genre for a generation. Born in Amsterdam in 1621, he spent four formative years in Rome in the mid-1640s, returning with a taste for warm Mediterranean light and ruined architecture that set him apart from his more sober Haarlem contemporaries. He signed his work "Gio. Batta" in memory of that Italian sojourn. His son Jan Weenix and nephew Melchior d'Hondecoeter inherited the dead-game tradition and ran with it. Today his still lifes read as quiet meditations on abundance, mortality, and the texture of feathered things.
