About Balthasar Van Der Ast

Trained in the workshop of his brother-in-law Ambrosius Bosschaert the Elder, this Dutch Golden Age painter took the early flower-piece tradition and loosened it, adding shells, lizards, and overripe fruit to compositions that had previously been all symmetry and botanical precision. Active in Utrecht and later Delft from roughly the 1620s through the 1650s, he bridged the rigid bouquet-on-a-ledge formula of his teacher and the more relaxed, atmospheric still lifes that came to define the mid-century. Look closely and you'll find his quiet sense of humor: a beetle creeping over a tulip, petals beginning to curl. Living things, briefly held.
