Among the founding figures of Spanish still life, this Madrid-born painter (1596–1631) brought a quiet geometric rigor to the genre at a moment when bodegón painting was still finding its language. Of Flemish and Spanish descent, he served in the royal guard while building a reputation for arrangements of fruit, sweets, and glassware set against deep, neutral grounds. His compositions are almost architectural: ceramics and confections lined up on stone ledges, each form weighted and lit with sober precision. For a contemporary eye trained on minimalism, the restraint feels surprisingly modern - these are paintings about looking carefully at ordinary things.
