About Walter Kurt Wiemken

Few Swiss modernists pushed surrealism into such unsettling psychological terrain. Born in Basel in 1907 and active through the 1930s, he built dreamlike compositions populated by harlequins, lovers, and cross-sectioned interiors where private lives are laid open like architectural plans. His muted palette and stage-set perspective owe something to de Chirico and the metaphysical painters, though his sensibility runs darker and more intimate. Cut short by his death in 1940 after a fall in the Spanish mountains, his output is small but strange in the best way. The work rewards slow looking — viewers who like Magritte or Delvaux tend to find a kindred mind here.
