About Marvin Dorwart Cone

One of the central figures of Iowa Regionalism, working alongside his lifelong friend Grant Wood, this Cedar Rapids painter spent decades distilling the Midwestern landscape into something quieter and more contemplative than the movement's better-known headliners. Born in 1891, he trained at the Art Institute of Chicago and later in Paris, bringing a continental sensitivity for atmosphere and structure back to the rolling farmland he knew best. His cloud studies and stone country vistas trade Wood's tight stylization for a softer, more painterly approach. For viewers drawn to American scene painting without the theatrics, his work offers Regionalism in a thoughtful, almost meditative key.
