About Samuel Colman
Among the second generation of the Hudson River School, he stood out for restless curiosity - happy to paint the storm-lit Hudson one year and the harbors of the Mediterranean the next. Born in 1832, he trained briefly under Asher B. Durand and went on to co-found the American Watercolor Society, helping legitimize the medium in a country still fixated on oil. Travel through Spain, North Africa, and the American West gave his landscapes an unusually wide vocabulary of light and weather. For viewers today, his canvases reward slow looking - atmospheric, geographically specific, and quietly ambitious in their handling of sky and distance.
