About William Frederick Ritschel

Few American painters knew the Pacific surf the way this German-born marine specialist did. Born in Nuremberg in 1864, he trained at the Royal Academy in Munich before emigrating to the United States in the 1890s, eventually settling on the Monterey coast at Carmel Highlands, where he built a stone studio above the cliffs and painted the same restless ocean for decades. Elected to the National Academy of Design in 1914, he stood at the center of California's plein air marine tradition. His storm-pounded headlands and moonlit Pacific scenes still feel weather-bitten and alive, carrying the heave of real water rather than the polish of studio invention.
