About George Morland

Few English painters captured rural life with less sentimentality and more affection than this late-Georgian observer of stables, taverns, and farmyards. Working in the 1780s and 90s, he turned out small-scale genre scenes of laborers, gypsies, smugglers, and animals at a furious pace - partly from genuine love of the subject, partly to outrun the debts that dogged him until his death in 1804. His loose, painterly handling and earthy palette influenced a generation of British animal and landscape painters, including James Ward. For modern viewers, his work offers a window into Georgian country life that feels lived-in rather than picturesque - intimate, unguarded, and quietly humane.
