About Wilhelm Kuhnert

Among the first European painters to study African wildlife from direct observation rather than zoo specimens or taxidermy, this German artist (1865-1926) brought a naturalist's rigor to animal painting at a time when most of his peers were still working from imagination. He made several extended expeditions to German East Africa beginning in the 1890s, sketching lions, elephants and big game in the field, then working the studies into finished oils back in Berlin. His lions in particular shaped how generations of Europeans pictured Africa. For contemporary collectors, the appeal is that rare combination: paintings with the authority of scientific observation and the atmosphere of genuine wilderness.
