About Matthijs Maris

The dreamiest and strangest of the three Maris brothers, he turned away from the realist Hague School his siblings helped define and drifted into something closer to symbolist reverie. Born in The Hague in 1839 and settled in London from 1877, he spent decades reworking paintings of shepherdesses, brides, and fairy-tale children behind veils of softened paint, building up surfaces until figures seemed to dissolve into mist. The Pre-Raphaelites admired him; later collectors hunted his canvases obsessively. For a contemporary viewer, his work offers a quiet alternative to nineteenth-century clarity, a half-remembered atmosphere that rewards slow looking and rooms with low, steady light.
