About Francis Luis Mora

Born in Uruguay in 1874 and raised in Boston, he became the first Hispanic member of the National Academy of Design and one of the most sought-after portraitists of the American Gilded Age. Trained under Edmund Tarbell and Benson, he absorbed the warm tonalism of the Boston School but pushed it toward something looser and more cosmopolitan, with debts to Velázquez and Manet visible in his brushwork. He painted presidents, society wives, and crowded subway cars with the same democratic eye, treating modern New York as a fit subject for grand-manner painting. For contemporary viewers, his work bridges old-world figuration and the restless energy of early twentieth-century America.
