About Farrukh Beg

Few painters moved between courts as fluidly as this Persian-trained master, who carried the refinements of Safavid painting into Mughal India and later into the Deccan. Arriving at Akbar's atelier in the 1580s, he contributed to the great Akbarnama project before drifting south to serve Ibrahim Adil Shah II at Bijapur, where his style turned stranger, moodier, and more introspective. His late works, particularly the brooding Sufi sages of the 1610s, anticipate a kind of psychological portraiture rare in Islamic painting. For viewers drawn to the meeting point of Persian elegance and Indian atmosphere, his pictures still feel quietly radical four centuries on.
