About Jean Joseph Benjamin Constant
Few nineteenth-century French painters committed to Orientalist subject matter with the saturated intensity he brought to it. Trained in Paris and deeply marked by a formative trip to Morocco in the early 1870s, he built a career on harem scenes, North African processions, and languid interiors lit by sun through tile and silk. By the 1880s he was a fixture of the Salon, and he later turned to society portraiture in London, painting Queen Victoria among others. For contemporary viewers, his canvases offer something the camera never quite manages: heat, texture, and color treated as their own narrative subject.
