About John Collier

Working at the tail end of British Pre-Raphaelitism, this late-Victorian painter (1850–1934) carved out a peculiar niche between literary fantasy and unflinching society portraiture. He trained under Lawrence Alma-Tadema and Edward Poynter, and his marriage into the Huxley family - first to Marian, then to her sister Ethel - placed him at the intellectual centre of Darwinian London, a world he painted with cool, almost photographic clarity. His range is what holds up today: enchantresses and historical popes on one canvas, then a pink-gowned lady with carnations on the next. He took the Victorian narrative tradition seriously after most of his peers had moved on.
