About Walther Gamerith

An Austrian painter working between the wars, he built a quietly intense body of portraiture rooted in the introspective tradition of Central European modernism. Born in 1902 in Upper Austria, he studied in Vienna and developed a palette of muted earth tones and a brushwork that favored psychological weight over surface charm. His portraits of family members, including his wife Grete, and his unsparing self-portraits sit comfortably alongside the figurative work of his Austrian contemporaries without ever quite imitating them. For viewers drawn to the slower, more searching side of early twentieth-century portraiture, his paintings reward sustained looking in a way livelier styles rarely do.
