About Carl Spitzweg

Few painters captured the quiet absurdity of nineteenth-century bourgeois life with as much affection as this Munich-born artist, who started out as a pharmacist before turning to painting around 1833. He became the great visual chronicler of Biedermeier Germany, his small canvases populated by bookish eccentrics, dozing watchmen, and threadbare poets lost in their own small worlds. Largely self-taught, he absorbed influences from Dutch genre painting and the French Barbizon school during his European travels, developing a warm, glowing palette and a gently satirical eye. His scenes still resonate because the human types he painted - the obsessives, the daydreamers, the comfortable cranks - haven't gone anywhere.
