About Sebastiano Ricci

Few painters did more to drag Venetian art out of its seventeenth-century slump and into the airy lightness of the Rococo. Born in Belluno in 1659, he worked across Italy, Vienna, and London, absorbing Veronese's compositions so thoroughly that some contemporaries accused him of forgery rather than homage. That fluency became his gift: religious and mythological scenes built with theatrical gesture, pale skies, and a palette that anticipates Tiepolo, his great successor and nephew-in-trade. His paintings reward viewers who like narrative with their beauty, drama held together by elegant draftsmanship rather than shouted at you. Hung today, his scenes still carry that confident, late-Baroque sense of occasion.
