About Henry Salem Hubbell

Trained in Chicago and then Paris under Whistler and the academic painters at the Académie Julian, this American Impressionist built his reputation in the early twentieth century on luminous interior scenes of women - reading, taking tea, caught in quiet domestic moments lit by filtered window light. Born in Kansas in 1870, he absorbed the French Intimist sensibility of Vuillard and Bonnard and translated it into something distinctly American, eventually settling in Florida where he helped found the Society of Four Arts in Palm Beach. His tea-table and parlor paintings carry the unhurried calm of a vanished afternoon - the kind of image that quiets a room rather than demanding it.
