About Arthur Joseph Gaskin

Few English illustrators bridged the Arts and Crafts movement and the medieval revival as cleanly as this Birmingham-trained draughtsman, who worked from the 1880s into the early twentieth century. A close associate of William Morris, he produced the woodcut illustrations for the Kelmscott Press edition of Spenser's Shepheardes Calender in 1896, and his linework carries that distinctive Pre-Raphaelite weight: careful contour, devotional stillness, faces drawn from quattrocento Italian panel painting rather than Victorian sentiment. For collectors drawn to religious imagery with genuine art-historical pedigree - work that nods to Burne-Jones and the early Renaissance without slipping into kitsch - his compositions hold their own on a serious wall.
