About Bernardo Strozzi

Few Genoese painters bridged the late Mannerist and full Baroque worlds as fluently as this Capuchin friar turned society portraitist. Trained in Genoa and steeped in the Lombard naturalism of the Procaccini, he absorbed Rubens during the Flemish master's Italian sojourn, then fused that warmth with Venetian colorism after moving to the lagoon city in 1631. The result is paint that feels almost edible: thick impasto, glowing flesh tones, and saints who look like they've just turned to face you mid-sentence. His religious scenes carry an unguarded humanity that still reads as modern. The drama is intimate rather than theatrical, which is precisely why his work rewards close, lingering looking.
