About Di Credi

A Florentine painter active in the late fifteenth century, Lorenzo di Credi trained alongside Leonardo da Vinci in the workshop of Andrea del Verrocchio, and the influence shows: precise drawing, smoothly modeled flesh, and a careful, almost crystalline finish that places him firmly in the early Renaissance tradition. He eventually inherited Verrocchio's workshop and ran it for decades, producing devotional panels distinguished by their quiet restraint and meticulous surface. His religious scenes, particularly the Annunciations and Madonnas, reward slow looking. For a contemporary viewer, di Credi offers the clarity and stillness of Florentine devotional painting without the operatic drama of the later High Renaissance.
