About Luca Giordano
They called him Luca fa presto - Luca works fast - and the nickname stuck because he could finish an altarpiece in the time it took his rivals to prime a canvas. A Neapolitan born in 1634, he trained under Jusepe de Ribera and absorbed that master's dark tenebrism before opening it up into something lighter, more theatrical, and unmistakably Baroque. He spent a decade as court painter to Charles II of Spain, frescoing the Escorial at full tilt. His religious scenes carry a swirling, cinematic energy that still reads as immediate - drama you can feel across a room, painted by someone who never let technique slow down feeling.
