About Simon Vouet

Few painters did more to drag French art out of late Mannerism and into the Baroque than this seventeenth-century court favorite. After fourteen formative years in Italy absorbing Caravaggio's drama and the Carracci's grandeur, he returned to Paris in 1627 as Louis XIII's First Painter, and effectively rebuilt French taste from the inside. His studio trained the next generation, including Charles Le Brun and Eustache Le Sueur, who would go on to define the Sun King's visual world. What lingers in his religious and allegorical canvases is the warmth: sweeping drapery, glowing flesh tones, and faces caught mid-feeling. Devotional painting with genuine human pulse.
