About Jehan Georges Vibert

Few nineteenth-century painters skewered the Catholic clergy with as much affectionate mischief as this Parisian academic. Born in 1840 and trained at the École des Beaux-Arts under Picot and Barrias, he built a career on small, jewel-bright scenes of cardinals caught in distinctly worldly moments: counting alms, sneaking glances, dozing over books. The brushwork is tight, the colors saturated, the storytelling unmistakable - a painter who treated genre painting as gentle theater. He was also a serious technician, writing on watercolor practice and helping standardize artist materials of his era. The appeal today is the wit: pictures that reward close looking and reliably make a room more interesting.
